I'd probably ask for the same in their position.

If we actually need their cooperation, then they'll get what they're asking for, and while it's kind of a d**k move, the d**k move is often the smart move in international diplomacy.

Yes, poor things - how else are they going to afford all that bling and the indoor desert ski resort?

We can't get off the oil standard fast enough.

Good to see you, my son.

What good is having someone by the balls if you don't give them a good squeeze every once in a while.

Here's a simple solution:

Stop using your oil cartel (OPEC) as a way to raise prices arbitrarily. Lower them, and you will see an increase in the consumption of gas.

King Abdullah is starting to understand the basic principles of supply and demand, and he doesn't like it.

Sounds like the banks a year ago. Basically, he's asking for a bailout. But he doesn't need one.

I hope nobody pays. I mean, why didn't they just use all that money they were making to prepare for a rainy day?

I don't think that reducing oil usage is going to hit the Saudis too hard too quickly. It will take time to reduce oil usage, and in the meantime, the Saudis can prepare for a future where oil usage is reduced.

I wonder what global warming would do to the Saudis? Even if their deserts aren't made worse (how can something be worse than a desert?), they should realize that this kind of pollution isn't in anybody's interest, and that the costs of global warming would be greater than the benefits of continuing to burn fossil fuels like before, even for them.

I'm not convinced at all that they're preparing for that eventuality, and have hope that others can bring new energy sources to fruition without the socio-political/religious entanglements.

So wait, we decide to get off the overpriced juice because our relience on it pretty much screws everything up and they want us to pay them anyway?

How bout this, sell something worth buying and i'll spend money on it. If you don't have anything? Guess what I'm not going to pay you.

Disregard. My post went blank after I typed it out and I don't have the time or will to express it again. ;_;

See, there you go, excellent example - how can we live with ourselves if we know we're depriving Saudis of basic necessities like that? Maybe they'd have to settle for a silver-plated Audi or something instead - the shame.
