Should Obama Consider Gender for White House Picks?
Should Obama Consider Gender for White House Picks?
Many women's groups are worried about Obama's picks for his White House staff. Apparently, there's not enough women.

Should he pick the right person for the job? Or the right gender? picked by JoshSF49 1 year ago

Oh, I know, I think these women groups are too pro-women and not enough pro-america.

IMO, these women groups are just as collectively bad as pro-white groups or the NAACP. They don't care about the country or the people around them, they just care about their own collective groups.

While I agree with you, I was a little disappointed that his proposed Cabinet was all men. I mean, he's being very bi-partisan and colorblind in the rest, but I'd like to see more women in the mix, too.

That said, maybe there aren't enough women in the pool to choose from; I think the strongest candidate should be picked, but it would be nice if women were better represented, you see?

of course it would be nice, but in all fairness

Senate- 100 members, 13 are women
congress- 535 members, 61 are women

Yea, but whose fault is that? Women's, or a society that thinks twice about putting someone with a vagina in a position of leadership?

I'm gonna go with women. It is easier to talk about a glass ceiling, but I think it's a cop out. I think the real issue is that more women are afraid of breaking gender roles because they don't want to be the bread winner.

There are a lot of complicated issues surrounding women with power, but I don't think many of them have to do with what society will tolerate. I think it is scary for women to be the man, because when it comes to most relationships a guy wants to be the knight in shining armor and such, and it might feel emasculating for them to have a so who holds a position of power.

Now I'm not saying that many guys wouldn't be ok with it, I'm just saying many women are probly not ok with putting themselves in that position to begin with.

I understand. I'm not going to pretend to be the voice of experience, because I'm still in college. I just don't think women have all that many barriers in politics, of course I could just be a bit naive since I also didn't find it that odd that obama won.(predicted it the moment he ran)

Mm, well, I'm really not much older than you, but I've come across a few roadblocks to my career already. Like my boss patronizing me, frequently. They're of course not insurmountable, but they're definitely there. And you wouldn't believe the things I hear people in this community say... Anyway, it's too complicated a debate, and I'm not interested. We'll agree to disagree.

As a female who has had to fight tooth and nail to get ahead in a male-dominated industry, I think this is total and utter bulls**t.

The only "scary" thing is not knowing whether I'll get a raise because it might go to my less experienced but male colleague instead.

Why might some (or even many) women not feel comfortable putting themselves into a position of power? Because they'll be ostracized, torn apart and shredded by their male counterparts. They'll be second-guessed and doubted FAR more than any man, and any slipups or mistakes will be because "she's an emotional, irrational woman."

I'm not a raging feminist, but there are still huge gender inequalities in the workplace and the glass ceiling is no copout, it's real, it's there and it hurts when you hit it.

Fair enough, my old job was food so there wasn't much room for anything but normal high school shenanigans, and my new job is 80% women (cafeteria) I suppose it might be different once I get a real job in advertising, but I like to believe that it isn't as bad as statistics show.

First *hug*

Second, there's no problem being a raging feminist. :D Well, I don't mind, anyway.

But I do so hate the term "Feminazi." WTF!? You're going to equate the desire for equal rights with Nazis?!

*edit* Not directed at you, TM, just sayin'.

Don't even get me started on Feminazi.

I'm only a raging feminist when there's a need. Usually I'm just a quieter but FIRM advocate for equal rights.

And used, terribly incorrectly, to describe anyone (woman, because the people who use it can't believe a man would believe in feminism because they don't understand it) who has more progressive ideas about women than baby-makers and kitchen-cleaners.

It was first used on me in seventh grade, when I couldn't have told you a single thing feminists actually believed.

Point: Don't use it.
