A special election ensures that the people get to democratically choose who will represent them.

A nomination by the governor ensures that whoever will give the most benefit to the governor personally 1st and to the party 2nd will be named.

I am far from surprised that MSN would conveniently leave out the bit that the law requiring an election is only in place because of Kennedy. In 2004 he didn't want a republican governor to name the replacement for John Kerry so he used his "influence" to force through a change to Mass. law to its current state.

Now that the democratic party will gain if the Democrat governor gets to name kennedy's replacement, kennedy "requested" that the law be reverted back to the original.
