Judicial Review in the United States Posted: 2 months ago by
Ok, so in my Constitutional Law class this semester, the professor threw around the idea that Judicial Review is not in the Constitution on the first day of class. So, I obviously thought "How ridiculous. Even if it's not explicitly stated in the Constitution, it's implied and necessary." But then as I was sitting in the McDonald's drive thru tonight, I suddenly started to second-guess my opinion on that. One reason is because it give the SCOTUS authority over the other two branches. The SCO...

Some crazy idea I came up with Posted: 2 weeks ago by
Ok, last night I was thinking about how fat our nation is and a way to solve it. I came up with a way to combat it and well its still a young idea and I haven't told anyone else about it so as of now it remains untested and may have flaws or things I haven't quite worked out yet. But wouldn't it be cool if in office buildings they started putting large exercise rooms filled with a bunch of treadmills. Employers could give a half hour or an hour to their employees to exorcise and in return they would get a...

Churches & "non-profits" Tax-Free Status; Fair? Posted: 3 years ago by
This is another subject that has always bothered me tremendously. The idea that a church should be granted special tax breaks (that we pay for with higher taxes) is insane.
Churches should be taxed like any other business. Like any other business, let them write off any charity work that they do. Churches are businesses. They do not exist solely to bring people to God, they exist to bring people to God AND to generate income for the employees and officers of the church. Just as Wal*Mart exists to b...

Good Things about the Global Economic Recession Posted: 9 months ago by
I'm a glass-half-full kind of girl. As much as this recession is doomy and gloomy, I am convinced that there are tiny shreds of silver lining in this storm cloud. I'm not saying this recession is a good thing, but I thought it might be fun to come up with a list of some of the positive aspects of it. This is what I've got so far: Lower interest rates (yay!) A service industry that actually provides service. This might only make sense to my Western-Canadian comrades. An end to the gouging a...

The Political Spectrum: where are you? Posted: 1 year ago by
Based on debates and discussions here, it seems there are Plimates from every shade of the political spectrum. Where would you place yourself? How do you feel about government control over institutions such as medicine, education, the military and welfare? How do you feel about taxes? With which (if any) political party do you identify?...

Stupid Debates: Scissors vs. Pie. Posted: 9 months ago by
Can Pie open a letter? Can you use Pie to do handicrafts? Is Pie any good when you're trying to defend yourself against a lunatic?... well, maybe that third one. Debate the virtues of Pie vs. Scissors. Which one is the best? Why? What makes Pie so much better than a good pair of Fiskars?...

Workers Unions Posted: 8 months ago by
Often, I'll pick up my debate topic and head to a debate forum since debate threads don't have much longevity here, but I don't like other forums as much as I like Plime because Plime is the only forum I frequent with voting. I think the voting may be one of the reasons debatable topics here don't last too long, since we can just click to agree instead of posting a comment about agreeing which would require further input... ahem, to the point of my post. I think worker's unions, under the right circumst...

So, tell me Posted: 4 months ago by
I'm sure I'll get burned at the stake for this, but I really think it needs to be answered. I know there are a lot of Obama supporters here who just lambasted George W. while he was in office. ------------ So, tell me... If George W. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how he inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes? If George W. B...

So I got a call today from the SSA (Social Security Administration) informing me that my ex-wife is going to be receiving the checks for my son again. It's a courtesy call, what happens is this... I get Social Security Disability, my son also qualifies for a monthly check and his parent/guardian receives it. When he is with her, she gets it, when he is with me, I get it. It helps provide for him. ...What has happened in past years is this... For the first few years, she got 12 checks a year becaus...

Peak Oil Posted: 1 year ago by
I've noticed more and more people discussing this whole notion of "peak oil," that is, that earth has reached its maximum energy production and that civilisation as we know it will drastically change within the next few decades as we run out of oil and our poor oil-dependent economies shrivel and die. Check some of these out: http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/ http://www.peak-oil-news.info/ http://www.peakoil.com/ I find that most of this talk is just scare-tactic sensationa...

Open Letter to Mark Sanford, Governor of South Carolina Posted: 5 months ago by
Dear Marky, Can I call you Marky? I was happy to hear that you finally got some action, albeit it in a 3rd world country, thousands of miles away from home. Just FYI-the rest of us guys in our 40s and 50s are able to find dates in the Continental United States- you might try this; less money, less hassle. "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" -Sound of Music What were you thinking? Why did you charge the taxpayers of South Carolina for your dates? Why did you always fall back on religious ...

The Economy: Your Predictions Posted: 1 year ago by
So it's pretty well known now that the world's economy is in shambles. We're doing all right here in Canada (apparently the West might even stave off a recession), but I'm starting to think we might have our heads in the sand a bit here. From what I understand, since the US economy has tanked, people aren't buying things. Most things Americans bought were made overseas, such as in China, so these manufacturing-dependent nations and economies are also freefalling. Without any revenue, they won't be bu...

Thoughts on rural/small town America Posted: 7 months ago by
Whenever most people outside the US think of America (or at least the people I talk to), they think of places like New York City and the other big cities. However, some Americans think that rural areas and small towns are more 'American' than the cities and perhaps even the suburbs, that these places are somehow more patriotic, that they are more self-reliant. While the cities are a glamorous face of American-ness to the rest of the world with their sky-scrapers and their significant economic power, how w...

Your feelings on Gaza Posted: 11 months ago by
I can BARELY listen to the radio reports about the Israeli incursion. The situation absolutely disgusts me. Classic flame thrower response to a fly swatter size problem. I'm not a Hamas supporter, I do believe they brought this on themselves and to an extent on the Palestinian people. Israel is REALLY out of line and causing so much suffering, fear, and eventual radicalization of youth. Well, I really had no dog in the race this time, so in keeping optimistic, I decided to give Obama the benefit of positive thought for him and our country. That only lasted a few weeks. Right now, a $800 billion check is being written. Right now, a $800 billion stimulus bill has been passed...and No one even read the damn thing. The economy is bad. We know that. But what will help? Posted: 10 months ago by
Even with the stimulus packages will it actually help? Prices are up on a lot of products. Are people really going to blow this stimulus to put money into the economy? I know personally my company has laid off almost the whole staff. A lot of the people will just need this for basic needs: food, gas, bills etc. So will it actually help? What else should they do? What are you doing personally to get through these times?...
